Laminate flooring is often called an inexpensive alternative to solid and parquet flooring and "laminated flooring." Initially, this coating was conceived by manufacturers for exactly this purpose, however, modern laminate can reliably copy many materials, including tile. Thanks to this material, you can transform the interior, create a unique and beautiful design, but can you put it in the kitchen? Many people prefer to put tile than laminate, because, in their opinion, it can swell, scratch and deteriorate.

Laminate is a coating that consists of an average density of fibreboard, as well as paper with melamine resins, on the latter is applied drawing. This coating has a number of advantages:

  1. laminate perfectly copies expensive materials, including tile and stone;
  2. such floors provide a pleasant walk barefoot;
  3. the coating resembles natural wood;
  4. affordable price;
  5. ease of installation;
  6. resistance to abrasion, as well as temperature extremes;
  7. there are types of laminate, which make it possible to combine the "warm floor" system in the kitchen;
  8. many options for decor and respectable appearance.

Finishing laminate is almost the most affordable. At the same time, high-quality laminated floors can be put in the kitchen, because they are easy to clean, not afraid of blows, stains, scratches or cracks. However, if in the living room and bedroom you can safely lay different types of laminate, in the specific conditions of the kitchen it is better to choose its varieties.

Some types of laminate should not really be put in the kitchen, because they can not withstand any temperature fluctuations, or high humidity, or spilled liquids like beet juice or wine. In addition, from the fall of sharp and heavy objects such inappropriate coating can be deformed.

The choice of coating by strength class

It is important to focus on the strength class of the laminate, so that the floors in the kitchen are better able to resist various impacts, scratches and falling objects. This class is indicated by two numbers. For life is intended to cover class 21, 22 and 23. In the kitchen, it is best to put laminate 23 class. It is inexpensive, but will not last long, because it consists of only three layers.

However, it is better to use a commercial type of coating in the kitchen. More durable types of commercial classes are 31, 32, 33. However, the 31st class of durability is better suited for living rooms and bedrooms, and it is recommended to use 32, 33, 34+ classes for the kitchen. This class of coatings can last about 25 years in the kitchen.

Commercial coverage includes five layers:

  1. high density wood board;
  2. moisture resistant film at the base;
  3. decorative layer made of durable paper;
  4. acrylic resins to protect the decor;
  5. moisture resistant top layer.

Waterproof or moisture resistant coating?

Modern high-quality laminated panels with PVC base are almost not afraid of water, because they are applied as a protective layer to water-repellent compositions on the basis of wax. However, not all manufacturers handle the joints between the panels, and therefore these parts of the coating have a susceptibility to moisture.

  1. Moisture resistant laminate does not react to the increased humidity in the kitchen, however, such floors can deform if water gets into the joints. Moisture resistant laminate can withstand drops, sprays, and sometimes even puddles. However, a moisture resistant laminate should be exposed to liquid for no more than 20 minutes. If the kitchen is high humidity, then it is desirable to expose the moisture-resistant laminate to sealing joints.
  2. Waterproof PVC coating costs more. However, a layer of PVC can withstand moisture for six hours. Water-resistant PVC floors have processing of joints in the factory, so additional measures to protect here can be avoided. Laminate with PVC base is considered the most reliable, but waterproof PVC coating will be the most expensive.

When buying a laminate with a PVC base, you need to consider that there is no absolutely waterproof laminate. Moisture resistant laminate with PVC base is made of wood. Wood floor fibers will still absorb water. In addition, if the protective PVC film is damaged, the wood floor will absorb moisture.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of laminate is that you can create any design. You can put a coating of any color, including imitation under a white stone. Therefore, the interior of the kitchen can be done in any style. The decoration and design of the room are often performed in a complex, as a result of which a specific color should be selected for a particular kitchen interior.

  1. Country - style design, which is dominated by tinted, roughly treated wood in combination with wrought iron elements. Laminate can be used mainly dark color, which repeats the structure of the plank floor.
  2. The Swiss Chalet is a design style that combines wood and natural stone. You can combine stone and dark laminate. The interior is also combined with the help of laminate in the colors of "walnut" or "ash", as well as dark stone.
  3. Minimalism - style design assumes restraint. Finishing here involves a stone and laminate, which has a light, white, black or gray color.
  4. High tech. Design style involves a gray, black, occasionally white laminate or stone. Most often involve stone and laminate color "wenge".
  5. Provence. The interior of the kitchen involves mostly bright, pastel colors with small bright patches. A light laminate with an inexpressive and shabby texture is better suited for a floor. For example, you can choose the color of light "bleached oak."

White or light laminate can be laid for kitchen zoning. For example, various functional areas can be distinguished if you lay the panels that differ in texture, shades or colors. You can not only use laminate of different colors, but also use stone. Finishing may be different, because modern technologies allow you to create not only white, light or dark laminate, but also with a very unexpected texture, for example, imitating the skin of a crocodile or stingray. The interior with such a floor will look elegant and glamorous.

Recommendations for the selection of laminate

    1. The interior of the kitchen often involves the use of "warm floor". If you decide to use this system, then you need to lay a laminate that is specifically designed for this.
    2. One should pay attention to one professional moment. A larger room suggests that the floor should be more beautiful and more expensive. For example, in a large kitchen should lay a laminate under the tile. With a small room color accent to perform on the walls in the kitchen interior is selected neutral shade of the floor. It should be remembered that the floor can expand or narrow the interior of the room. Therefore, you need to lay a laminate that will meet the necessary requirements.
    3. To choose the best laminate for the kitchen and find out how safe the purchased material is, you should carefully study the appropriate marking. If the packaging laminate is labeled E-1, then this indicates that the laminate has the least amount of formaldehyde.
    4. An important role in the selection will play the type of connection. The best solution would be laminate, which has a tight lock connection. Since the kitchen does not exclude the fall of breakable and heavy objects, the probability of damage to the panels is quite high. Castle type will make it possible to easily replace the panel with a new one. You can also dismantle the coating if necessary.
    5. If we consider the appearance, then for the kitchen it is recommended to choose a coating that imitates tile. This option is often treated with antistatic agents, as a result, the coating does not attract dust.

  1. The larger size of the panels provides a smaller number of seams, which perfectly affects the cost.
