Quarantus (also called pink periwinkle) is a plant with tropical roots. In the wild, it can be found in many places: in Madagascar, in India and China, in Cuba, in Indonesia and the Philippines. There it looks much more impressive, its spreading bushes reach one and a half meters in height. In the middle lane, however, their size is more modest - a rare variety grows to a meter height. But the riot of colors always remains the same. No matter what color the leaves of the plant or its petals are, they always remain bright and eye-catching.

The flowering of the quarantus is long, most often from the beginning of spring to mid-autumn. In this case, the plant can survive the winter exclusively in indoor conditions. In the open ground, it is doomed to death.

Therefore, there are several options in which the breeding of the quarantus takes place:

  • One year old In this case, the flowers are planted anew each year, using shoots from the party of the previous year.
  • Perennial. In this case, the flowers are transplanted every fall into spacious flowerpots, and every spring returned to the open ground.
  • Homemade. Quarantus at home can live for many years, delighting with long flowering and the almost complete absence of difficulties in the care.

Depending on which method was chosen, the nuances of caring for a flower and the conditions that are necessary for its normal growth differ. They also differ depending on the selected species.

For decorative planting, they usually use pink quarantus, the most widespread variety of varieties. Differs in splendor flowering, with proper care can live for many years and grow into a large bush. Its leaves are narrow, glossy, pointed at the end.

The flowers have five petals, collected in a dense cup, from which yellow stamens barely peep out. Buds open alternately, flowering sequentially and alternating.

Indoors can bloom all year round, even in winter. The main variety includes subspecies.

Cooler

Can grow on the street, grow up to half a meter. Strongly branch, bloom profusely and for a long time. Flowers are round, large. The eye is bright. Includes:

  • Grape, the petals of which are painted in lilac, and the center in pink;
  • Peppermint, the petals of which are white and the middle is red;
  • Red, with the corresponding name bright red flowers;
  • The first kiss, with large velvety flowers of a wide variety of colors, is the most popular blue-violet hue;
  • Albus, with white petals, a yellow center, and delicate white veins on pointed, narrow leaves;
  • The cascade, which is the only one of all blooming quarantus flowers, has long pendant shoots capable of reaching up to one and a half meters in length, and has a wide variety of colors.

In order for quarantus, planting and caring for which take time and effort, to bring joy, it is necessary to approach the choice seriously - the desired variety must look attractive and not require too complicated manipulations to maintain life in it.

However, all the quarantines are quite unpretentious. It should start with breeding - because before taking care of the plant, it must be started.

Methods of reproduction of quarantus

Like any plant, a quarantus can reproduce in more than one way. Seeds, grafting, vegetative division - the choice depends solely on which option you like best and is in the reach of an adult plant.

In any case, the approach to growing a new quarantus should be taken seriously.

Seeds

The process of planting seeds is the most difficult of all, but if there is no ready-made adult plant that can be propagated, there is no alternative.

  1. Training. They usually begin the process at the very beginning of spring, preparing the seeds — wrapping them in gauze, and soaking them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for thirty minutes to kill all possible pests. In addition, the soil is mixed, taking equal shares of peat, sand and garden soil and steaming it also from pests.
  2. Sowing. The resulting soil is poured into a container for seedlings - it can be a specially purchased box or simple plastic cups - so that there is some distance to the edge. After moistening the ground a little, waiting for it to dry out, and sowing the seeds, covering them from above with at least two centimeters of soil.
  3. Creating suitable conditions and waiting. The container is covered with opaque polyethylene or cleaned in a dark place, making sure that the temperature was not lower than 25 degrees and not higher than 30. It is necessary to wait for germination in a week. Maximum - ten days.
  4. Care of seedlings. When the seedlings rise, it should be moved to a bright place (but not under direct sunlight), reducing the temperature to eighteen degrees. Every day, the ground around the seedlings must be very carefully loosened and irrigated from the sprayer.
  5. Seeding seedlings. When three leaves appear on sprouts, you can carefully dig them out of the ground and place them in a box at a distance of thirty centimeters from each other. After this, the seedlings should get stronger, it should have a root system. If the ground part does not add to growth for a long time, this is normal - the roots are growing at that time. If the leaves do not turn yellow, then everything is in order.
  6. Planting seedlings in the ground or pots. It is held in May, when the seedlings are quite strong and their root system is sufficiently formed. Before transplanting, the ground is poured abundantly, so that it is easier to separate from the pot, and they are transplanted in a single lump in the prepared well. It is impossible to divide sprouts that were in the same box from the moment of germination - their root systems are strongly intertwined and an attempt to forcibly separate them will lead to death.

Dividing bush

In the spring, in the period from March to May, in the presence of an adult plant, the quarantus multiplies more easily. With the help of a fairly sharp shovel, the root system of the adult bush is cut into two parts and the two resulting plants, sprinkled with fresh charcoal, are planted in the ground - in a pot or in the open air.

Cuttings

In early spring, you can trim the tops of adult bushes, remove the lower leaves from them and plant in flower pots, covered with a glass jar. Inside the pots there should be fertile soil mixed with sand in equal proportions, and inside the jars the humidity and temperature should not be lower than twenty degrees. Once a couple of days, the jar needs to be lifted, the plant sprayed and aired. After three weeks, the jar can be removed for good and either left the quarantined in a pot, or transplanted into open ground.

Transplanting the quarantine is a simple procedure. It is enough to dig a hole deep enough so that the whole clod of earth with the root system fits into it and pass the plant into it from the previous pot. Exactly also transplanting is carried out in a pot - it simply acts as a hole.

Peculiarities of care for cataractuses at home

If the catarantus was started, the cultivation and care will require time and effort. But at home, they will pay off handsomely - the plant will bloom all year round with bright large flowers. To make this possible, you should pay attention to:

  • Lighting. Quarantus is a tropical plant, but direct sunlight is, nevertheless, contraindicated. Pots with him should be put on the east or west window-sill, in the midday heat cover with curtains so that the yellowing of the leaves does not start - a reaction to sunburn.
  • Temperature. Perhaps the only truly difficult article in the care of quarantus - it requires a steady temperature of twenty to twenty-five degrees in the summer and from twelve to eighteen in the winter. If it is impossible to provide the winter temperature (and it is difficult to withstand this cold in the room where the person’s active life is passing), the flower should be provided with additional lighting. Otherwise, its branches will stretch out and will have a painful look.
  • Humidity. In tropical forests, the air is always filled with water - such conditions should be provided to the home plant. Once a day it should be sprayed with a spray gun and it is good if there is a tank next to it, a special fountain for humidifying the air, or a tray with wet sea pebbles. On hot days, spraying should be carried out up to three times, observing the condition of the plant - dryness and brittle branches indicates a lack of water in the air.
  • Watering. In tropical forests, the soil is always quite wet - therefore, watering the quarantus should be such that the soil always remains moist. At the same time it is impossible to allow stagnation of water, and the tray from under the pot should be emptied in the evenings. The water itself must be well purified (or well settled) and warm.
  • Fertilizer. Twice a month, using mineral supplements with a high content of phosphorus and potassium, the plant is fertilized from April to September - or, if the flowering period lasts longer, until its end.
  • Pruning branches. It is carried out once in two weeks with young bushes - extra shoots are pinch off so that the others branch and grow thicker. In the spring, all the bushes, from young to old, are cut by a third - this allows them to look tidy longer.
  • Transfer. Every year, the quarantine must be transplanted, passing from one pot to another. This is necessary because the root system of the plant grows constantly and ceases to fit in the old container. Pots must be deep and narrow.

Sometimes there are unpleasant diseases in the quarantine. It can be affected by pests, it can turn yellow from too much light or rot because of too much watering. To prevent this, follow the recommendations for care.

Peculiarities of care for quarantus in open ground

Quarantus in open ground is even less whimsical than its relative growing up on a windowsill. Take into account the following:

  • Lighting. Plant should be planted in places where there is not too much or not enough sunlight. In the shadows of its branches will be too long, painful, in the bright sun will turn yellow leaves.
  • Topping. Once a week after the carantus was planted in the open ground, cultivation from the seeds of which was completed, you should pinch its top. This makes the trunk more branched, and the bush itself is more lush.
  • Watering. Quarantus should be watered so often that the soil at its roots remains moist. During the rain, you should make sure that the water does not stagnate - you can organize a drain for it. From time to time the plant can be sprayed - its branches will react to it in the most favorable way.
  • Fertilizer. Every ten days in the flower bed you need to apply fertilizers rich in calcium and phosphorus.

Care of the quarantine does not require much effort, but must be carried out carefully and regularly. Then the plant will bloom and delight the brightness of the buds all the time, from April to September - and at home all year round.
